Salem mayor has put her money where her mouth is over local college’s LBGT bigotry

Earlier this summer, Kim Driscoll, the first female mayor of Salem, Mass., pulled funding from Gordon College, a small, Christian liberal arts school located outside Boston. The school had cosponsored a letter to President Obama asking for a religious exemption to his executive order to end employment discrimination based on sexual orientation.

ok while we are telling humorous/benign stories about being hit on

my aunt has the BEST STORY about when she was studying abroad in france for a semester in college, and she and a friend were wandering around I think Paris, and these two men sort of sidled up to them and one of them said in a very thick accent

"hello girls, would you like to get some keek with us"

and the second man immediately elbowed his friend viciously and hissed “IDIOT! IT IS ‘CAKE’!!!!”

How much language do I need to know to become an au pair? I would be thrilled to travel to anywhere, really, but France is the ultimate goal. I speak a tiny bit of French but not nearly enough to get by in a casual conversation. I have two more years before I'm old enough to go but I'm worried I won't know enough to be comfortable there! advice on language would be lovely, thank you!

You’ll learn the most once you are there. For now, use Duolingo! They have a website and an app. You can also watch children’s shows, which you can probably find on YouTube. Also, order a couple of workbooks or pocket guides! Try to practice a little every day. Even if you can only master a few phrases, you’ll be in much better shape, than knowing nothing!

To be an au pair in France, you’ll have to take a language class. The more basics you know, the more you’ll gain from the classes. So, teach yourself numbers, and how to pronounce certain syllables together. Of course, teach yourself the basics, like hello, please, thank you, goodbye, help, do you speak English, yes, no, and so on.

You have two years, so you can actually learn quite a bit during that time! Just work hard for it, and you’ll accomplish it! Good luck!

I highly recommend Comme une Français on Youtube for anyone looking into improving their French! Geraldine, who is a native speaker, makes videos on everything from common French slang to French table manners. It’s been really useful for me. I also found Duolingo helpful(:

Everything you need to know below the cut!

DISCLAIMER: This post refers to the LONG STAY VISA process for au pairs going from the USA to France. I am not familiar with the short stay visa process. I worked with the consulate of Chicago. Rules and regulations are subject to vary by consulate, so check your consulate’s website for specific instructions.
